1Basics of Window Soundproofing
Check before soundproofing your window
The sound from outside doesn’t come through only the window.
The sound may also be coming through air vents and/or sewage pipes. Please check the room again so that you don’t run into the situation where you think: “I installed soundproofing on my window but it didn’t work.” Please also consider that it is difficult to prevent vibrational sounds such as car and construction noises.
To begin with, soundproofing of windows is difficult…
Windows are thin, so a single piece of glass will inevitably let sound pass through.
Because windows are openings in the walls, it is different from wall soundproofing. If you want to prevent sound using only curtains, then you will finally be able to experience quiet by implementing the following 3-tier system:
- Soundproof lace curtain
- Soundproof curtain liner, and
- Soundproof curtain.
If you want to completely block the sound from the windows, we recommend using the
- ONE-TOUCH Soundproof Wall Panel
2Elements of Window Soundproofing
Soundproof curtains require weight
Please pick up and feel the weight of the “soundproof curtain products” often sold at home improvement stores. Is it heavy and strenuous?
“Sound” is the pressure that shakes the air, so it is necessary to catch it using a heavy object in order to properly absorb and counteract it (sound insulation). It will become clear that if a material is not heavy against the wall, it will allow the sound to escape it.
Importance of a multi-layered structure featuring absorption and reflection
When choosing a soundproof curtain, in addition to weight, soundproofing is enhanced by incorporating:
- sound absorption that absorbs sound, and
- sound insulation that reflects sound.
At Pialiving, the soundproof curtains that we sell have the following structure, which incorporates both sound absorption and sound insulation.
The Importance of Waffle Fabrics
The surface of our recommended soundproof curtain “COZE” has a waffle structure that is bumpy when viewed up close. This waffle fabric forms an important sound-absorbing layer. The way you can imagine how it works is that the pressure of the sound is securely captured by the many large holes, and the vector of the sound waves is steadily bounced between the weaves and finally absorbed.
Do not leave any gaps around the window
Simply hanging your soundproof curtains doesn’t produce a sufficient effect. Even if you hang a high efficiency soundproof curtain, if there is a gap at the sides or top, the sound will leak through.
It is important to plan how you can hang your soundproof curtains:
- Use long curtains.
- If possible, use a curtain rail cover.
- Get rid of the folds at the top of the curtain and fit it snugly on the window.
- Overlap your curtains
If you can achieve this look, that’s perfect!
Soundproof curtain + Soundproof liner + Soundproof lace curtain
“I cannot change to a double-pane window.” “I don’t want the sunlight to be blocked by using a soundproof board.” “I want to reduce the sound coming through my windows more simply.”
In such cases, we recommend the combination of: “COZE Soundproof Curtain”, ”Soundproof Curtain Liner” and “TORU Soundproof Lace Curtain”. Since this creates 2 additional layers of air space, the effect will be considerably stronger.
3Let’s soundproof with curtains
Professional Soundproof Curtain
Rather than a curtain, a soundproof cloth is fixed along the window frame, and because it fits snuggly around the window, it is for use with windows where the curtains don’t open and close.
Soundproof curtain + Soundproof lace curtain
For windows that open and close frequently.
Do not use drapes to stop the sound from getting through, instead cover the entire window snuggly.
4I want to do something with my existing curtains
For those who are wondering “Is there a simple way to add soundproofing to my existing favorite curtains?” then we would also recommend using the Soundproof Curtain Liner, which makes use of the triple structure of the COZE Soundproof Curtain. This product, which has been originally developed by Pialiving, is a convenient soundproofing item that can add the 'COZE Curtain effect' to any variety of commercially available curtains. If you are worried that ‘replacing your curtains altogether is troublesome', why not begin soundproofing your windows with this product?
5I want to get rid of the window itself
For those who say “rather than just using curtains, I want to fill in the wall itself”, Pialiving accepts custom-made orders of our item called “ONE-TOUCH Soundproof Panel for Windows”.
This product is a soundproof board that fits perfectly in the window, with a handle and rubber seal that fills in the gap. Our company has adapted our very popular “ONE-TOUCH Soundproof Wall Panel” to be used for windows.
We will also manufacture it while carefully adjusting for tilted window frames and so on, so once you have accurately measured your window, please contact us.
